ALASKA SLIDES PAST VICTORIA, NOW 2-0

Oct 17th, 2009

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Scott Burt scored the tie-breaking goal late in the second period, and Alaska held Victoria without a shot for the first ten minutes of the third in an eventual 5-3 win in front of 4,949 Saturday at Sullivan Arena.

The Aces beaten the Salmon Kings in 10 of their last 11 meetings in Anchorage and 12 of the previous 14 overall, and look to sweep the three-game series Monday night at 7:15 p.m.  The game will be broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM, with Peanut Farm Pre-Game Show coverage beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Victoria grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Scott Howes followed his own shot and scored just 24 seconds into the contest.  Lance Galbraith quickly answered, tipping in a power play goal three minutes later to level the game 1-1 after 20 minutes.  Matt Stefanishion blasted home a one-timer 42 seconds into the second period off the rush, and when Alexandre Imbeault followed with another power play goal less than three minutes later, Alaska had suddenly taken command at 3-1.

But the visitors battled back, drawing within 3-2 on a one-timer by former Aces Olivier Filion at 5:32 of the middle frame, and tying the game when Mike Burgoyne set up Chad Painchaud for a virtual tap-in nine minutes later.  Burt's goal came off the rush and after a centering pass from rookie Patrick Brosnihan, the Alaska captain managed to flip in a backhander with 1:28 left in the period.

The Alaska defense made the 4-3 lead stand up, limiting the Salmon Kings to one shot in the first 16 minutes of the final period and three overall in the frame.  John Lammers put the game away with a shorthanded goal at 15:56, the second in as many nights for the Aces against Victoria, which is now 0-for-9 on the series with the man advantage.  Sebastian Dahm again got the win with 26 saves, while Alaska finished with a 39-29 edge in shots (14-3 over the final 20 minutes).
