MARTIN RETURNS, GOALIE ADDED TO ACES ROSTER

Oct 3rd, 2009

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Alaska Aces have signed defenseman Derick Martin and goaltender Scott Reid (pictured playing in Milwaukee in 2007) to one-year contracts for the 2009-10 ECHL season.

The 27-year-old Martin returns to the Aces for a third consecutive year, having actually begun last season by playing 14 games in the American Hockey League for Providence. He turned in a solid +12 rating (third on the team) in 54 games with the Aces, and enjoyed a three-point night with a goal and two assists in a 6-5 victory at Bakersfield January 9. Martin’s steady play continued in the postseason, as he finished tied for the team lead with Colin Hemingway at +12 in 21 playoff games while assisting on six goals.

The Timmins, Ontario native gives Alaska three “veterans” on its roster (those players with 260 or more games played professionally). Martin, who speaks fluently in both French and English, joined the Aces in February 2008 and was named ECHL Plus Performer of the Month that March, finishing at +18 in only 27 games. He scored two crucial goals against Idaho in Alaska’s first round sweep of the defending ECHL champions in the 2008 playoffs, including the game-winner at 2:34 of the second overtime in Game 3.

Reid, who will turn 33 in November, brings 319 games of pro experience to the pipes, the last 81 coming over two seasons with the now-defunct Rocky Mountain Rage of the Central Hockey League. His experience outside his 282 CHL appearances includes 20 games in the American Hockey League between 2005-07 and the first 17 games of his pro career, which came in the West Coast Hockey League with the Bakersfield Fog (the name used prior to “Condors”) and the Reno Rage. The 6-4, 205-pound Reid has played 26 games in the postseason and has gone 43-28-8 over his last two regular seasons. His best year came with San Angelo in 2003-04, when he was named CHL Goaltender of the Year after posting a 32-9-4 record with six shutouts, a 2.27 GAA, and a .938 save percentage. He followed up the next season with a 31-18-4 mark with the Saints (2.75 GAA, .913 save pct.).

Alaska, which came within a game of capturing its second Kelly Cup in four years last season, opens the regular season in Anchorage against Victoria October 16, 17 and 19 (all three games will start at 7:15 p.m.). The third annual “Paint the Rink Pink” pre-season games at Sullivan Arena, with a portion of the proceeds being donated toward breast cancer awareness, will be played against Kalamazoo Oct. 7 and 8 at 7:15 p.m. Those interested in ticket or sponsorship information may visit the Aces offices at the corner of 15th and Gambell Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
