DESPERATE GRIZZLIES RALLY PAST SHORTHANDED ACES
Jan 9th, 2010
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Playing their 10th game in 14 nights with only 11 regulars, the Alaska Aces saw their three-game winning streak come to an end with a 5-1 loss to Utah before 4,576 Saturday at Sullivan Arena (photo: Greg Martin).
As a result of injuries to Scott Burt and Colin Hemingway, and one-game suspensions handed out to Matt Stefanishion, Lee Green, and Nick Tuzzolino, Alaska dressed just seven forwards and four defensemen, not including forwards Merit Waldrop and Jim Dahl, pressed into emergency duty on the weekend. Utah also started just 13 players after an injury to Jadren Beljo and suspensions to former Ace Lance Galbraith and Tony Romano.
A sluggish first period saw the teams combine for just 11 shots on goal, one of those a backhander by John Lammers that broke a scoreless tie in the final minute of the frame, his 20th goal in 25 ECHL games this season. After a tip-in by Tim Crowder tied the contest at 7:54 of the second period, the game turned on a key sequence shortly thereafter. ECHL All-Star center Nick Mazzolini thought he had regained the lead for Alaska on a wrap-around, but the play was ruled no goal. A few shifts later, Hugo Carpentier gave the Grizzlies their first lead at 5:10 on a similar play, one that was argued at length by the Aces and resulted in a two-minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty assessed against Derick Martin.
Patrick Asselin scored his first goal of the season 48 seconds later on the ensuing power play, and followed with his second of the night with 1:24 left in the period to give Utah a commanding 4-1 bulge at the break. After a failed power play early in the third period, Alaska saw the Grizzlies put the game away on an unassisted goal by Vladimir Nikiforov with 7:04 remaining. Scott Reid absorbed the defeat in net, finishing with 19 saves. The loss marked only the third for the Aces in 26 games against Utah at Sullivan Arena (22-3-1). Meanwhile the Grizzlies snapped a six-game winless streak and claimed just their second victory in 14 games.
Alaska missed an opportunity to reach .500 and now sits at 16-18-3 overall, tied with Utah for third place in the West Division, six points behind second-place Victoria. The Salmon Kings will play host to Las Vegas next Tuesday and Wednesday, and the Wranglers will continue to Anchorage for a pair against the Aces January 15 and 16 at 7:15 p.m. Las Vegas beat Ontario 5-1 Saturday to extend its unbeaten streak to 10 games and took two of three from Alaska back in October. The Aces, 5-2-1 on their current 10-game homestand, and Wranglers can be heard live on KFQD 750 AM, with the Peanut Farm Pre-Game Show getting underway at 7:00 p.m. next Friday and Saturday night.
