PREVIEW: Aces-Bulls Rematch

(Photos by Skip Hickey) The Alaska Aces face a Saturday rematch on home ice against the San Francisco Bulls, the finale of back-to-back games in as many nights between the two clubs. The two teams are facing each other for the first set of games since the opening round bout of the Kelly Cup Playoffs last season, won by the Aces, 4-1. The Aces went 7-1-1 in regular season play against the Bulls last season. 

Tonight’s Promotion: 
Pirate Night   

Details: The Aces host “Pirate Night” at Sullivan Arena, inviting fans in attendance to dress in pirate costume. The Aces will also suit up in specialty pirate jerseys, with a live auction for each jersey hosted on the ice of Sullivan Arena immediately following the game.

RED HOT
The Aces are in their first season as the ECHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames (National Hockey League). The partnership includes an American Hockey League affiliation with the Abbotsford Heat. Four players (Joni Ortio, James Martin, Zach Davies, Brendan Connolly) on the Aces roster are under contract to the Flames or Heat and four players (Ortio, Martin, Davies, Andy Taranto) suited up for the Flames in the 2013 YoungStars Classic in Penticton, British Columbia.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT
Tonight is the first time this season that the Aces will play in the second game in as many days. Last season, the Aces went 21-4-3 when playing in the second leg of back-to-back scenarios.

LAST TIME OUT:
SF 2 – AK 1 (10/18/13): Despite a 45-19 shots advantage, including a 17-8 total in the third period, the Alaska Aces were defeated by the San Francisco Bulls, 2-1 before 4,708 fans at Sullivan Arena. Brett Parnham collected the game winner with 6:16 left in regulation on a bad angle shot from the left corner while chasing his own rebound. Tyler Beskorowany helped San Francisco escape with 44 saves for the win, on a night that began with the Aces unveiling three new banners for last season’s Brabham Cup, regular season Conference and Division titles.

HOME GROWN
The Aces season opening roster for 2013-14 features four players (Nick Mazzolini, Dustin Molle, Evan Trupp, Eli Zuck) who grew up in the Anchorage, Alaska area.

GOAL ORIENTED
With the addition of Peter Sivak, the Aces have two of the top five ECHL goal scorers in its lineup from the 2012-13 season. Sivak collected 33 goals in his first ECHL season, ranking fifth in the league. Nick Mazzolini, suiting up in his third season in an Aces uniform, notched a career high 36 goals which finished tied for second (Colton Yellow Horn, Ontario) and two off the league lead (Mathieu Roy, Florida).

BACK FOR MORE
The Aces roster features 13 players returning from last season’s squad that captured their third straight Brabham Cup championship. Among the names are both goaltenders (Gerald Coleman, Mark Guggenberger), who were re-signed in the offseason and 2012-13 Aces leading scorer Nick Mazzolini, also returning for his fourth season in an Aces sweater. Last season, the Aces led the ECHL in penalty killing percentage (87.4), were second in fewest goals allowed (2.3), third in fewest shots allowed (27.1) and were tied for the ECHL lead in home wins (26).
