Aces complete sweep of Idaho with overtime thriller Saturday

Photo by Skip Hickey/Alaska Aces   ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – Nolan Descoteaux scored 1:47 into overtime, and the Alaska Aces completed a three-game sweep of the visiting Idaho Steelheads with a 3-2 win Saturday at the Sullivan Arena. With the win, the Aces pulled into a tie with Idaho for third place in the ECHL’s Mountain Division. The win was Alaska’s second straight over the Steelheads, going back to a January 7th game in Boise. Idaho scored the first two goals of the game. The win gives Utah a split of the two-game series. Alaska won Friday’s contest 3-1. The Grizzlies jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Michael Pelech at 6:04, but that goal was answered by the Aces in a most unusual way. ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – Alaska winger Peter Sivak had a hat trick, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Orlando Solar Bears overwhelmed the Aces 9-6 Saturday night at the Sullivan Arena. The nine goals the Aces surrendered were the most this season. Orlando took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Ben Danford and Nick Brouillard before Alaska’s Sivak began his scoring binge. ANCHORAGE, ALASKA - Promising defenseman Mitch Jones, who started the season with the Aces but had his rookie season cut short by injury has signed a contract with the Alaska Aces. Head Coach and President of Hockey Operations Rob Murray made the announcement Thursday.Jones, 21, played 22 games in Glacier Blue last season, scoring five goals and adding five assists for ten points. He suffered a severe leg injury at Rapid City February 20 andhad surgery immediately. Jones has been rehabbing and has been medically cleared to play. He will wear #26 with the Aces. [READ MORE]

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – Alex Gacek scored two goals and Kasimir Kaskisuo stopped 49 shots as the Orlando Solar Bears defeated the homestanding Alaska Aces 6-2 Wednesday at the Sullivan Arena. The win for Orlando came in the first-ever game between the two ECHL franchises. The Solar Bears scored the first goal of the game at 5:49 of the first period as Gacek fired home his 12th goalof the season. BOISE, IDAHO – Steve Tarasuk scored 30 seconds into overtime after Alaska rallied with two goals late in the third period to down Idaho 5-4 Saturday at the CenturyLink Arena in downtown Boise. The win stops an Aces two-game losing skid, and stops Idaho’s 4 game win streak. Like Friday, the Steelheads got off to a quick start.
