2004-05: Matt stopped 50 shots in beating Las Vegas 4-2 April 8 to clinch the National Conference title after posting 18 stops to pick up 3-1 victory in first Aces start against the Wranglers March 26. Earned first playoff win with 31 saves at Trenton in Game 4 of the conference finals. Underhill was reassigned by the Providence Bruins of the AHL on 3/22/05, then acquired by the Aces in exchange for Lance Mayes and future considerations. Recorded a shutout with Providence on 2/25/05 vs. Portland, making 16 saves in a 5-0 win.
He also was reassigned by the St. John’s Maple Leafs of the AHL on 2/14/05 after appearing in one game in relief, seeing 38:32 of action on 2/11/05 vs. Manitoba and stopping all 17 shots he faced before falling in the seventh round of a 4-3 shootout loss. He had three shutouts last year for Mississippi, including 12/18/04 at Alaska, turning aside 30 shots in a 3-0 victory over the Aces.
Early pro/college: Played one game in the NHL on 3/7/04 with the Chicago Blackhawks against the Edmonton Oilers, making 29 saves – EDM won 4-3 at 44 seconds of overtime …Registered his first pro shutout with Florence on 1/11/04 vs. Toledo, turning aside 42 shots – FLO won 2-0 … Won his pro debut on 10/12/02 with Pee Dee vs. Columbia, making 19 saves – PD won 5-2. Played four seasons with the Cornell University Big Red (1998-2002) of the Eastern College Athletic Conference in Ithaca, New York … Finished with a four-year record of 42-31-9, a 2.32 goals-against average, 913 save percentage, and five shutouts in 88 games at Cornell …
Personal: Attended the NHL training camp of the Los Angeles Kings in 2004 … Has attended two AHL training camps; one with the Manchester Monarchs (2003) and the other with the Providence Bruins (2004) ... Represented the Pee Dee Pride at the 2003 ECHL All-Star Game, making 10 saves on 13 shots at Estero, Florida … Named to the NCAA First Team All-American in 2001-02 and won the Ken Dryden Award as the conference’s most outstanding goaltender. |
